How to Destroy Solar Systems
I'm at the age where no amount of gory movie violence effects me, I can only appreciate the special effects behind it. Slightly more worryingly I'm not fazed by media-transmitted tales real world violence and death.
I don't really care when a plane crashes (I'm always surprised it does not occur more often considering the sheer volume of travel) nor when terrorists kill white people (one white person is worth 100 less-than-white in terms of media attention and geo-politics). I have done enough reading in biology and history to know the sheer scales of death this planet contains - and sociology keeps me acutely aware how deaths can be treated as more or less meaningful than others. [I will qualify these statements to not sound like a misanthropist sociopath some other time...]
But the shattering of a planet, the extinguishing of a solar system, the extinction of a galaxy, the death of a universe - these concepts can still shake me. In my mind's eye I can see Earth's crust shatter and lift, the approaching wall of flame as the planetary atmosphere ignites, or the noon sky suddenly turn black and the stars begin to melt - and then my body feels a brief wave of vertigo as I'm sucked into the sky.
And, for a moment, a sliver of a sliver of the finality of death brushes my consciousness.
