Dwarf Fortress
Just throwing this idea out there for a future gaming possibility.
We could try doing a Succession Game of Dwarf Fortress. As far as I can tell it just involves passing a saved game back and forth. There are some pretty funny stories from dwarf fortress and especially from succession games. This LINK has some of the stories, with BoatMurdered being a good one.
DF tends to be a bit of a hard game to get into with a pretty steep learning curve but if a few of us could get the basics down this might be an option for a game that doesn't involve getting everyone together at a specific time.

It`s hard to resist the appeal of DwarfFortress - but that learning curve does a good job of dissuading me for now. The succession idea is a solid one and I still would like to see a game that half-played in the forums. Let`s ponder this.

Re: Dwarf Fortress
I have been trying to think of a game that can be played over the forums. There is always role playing and we have character sheets for it but it would involve someone coming up with stories and GMing it.
This is just an idea off the top of my head but there are various political simulators that are turned based. Democracy 3 is one that comes to mind but I know there are others. I don't know if that would make for a good forum game. I guess having votes and discussions as to what policies to put into or out of effect, etc...
And not a forum game but I think I am going to look into Uncharted Waters again. That is the game I had played a while back where you have a ship and explore or trade and things like that. It is a MMO which I am no super fond of but apparently it has a more mature community. The idea of the game is appealing but it might be a larger time investment. It is also free and just had a new expansion released for it. I think there is a small element of pay to win in the game but from the brief bit a read it is a very small component to the game and you don't need to buy anything in the game. Either way when I have some free time I make take a run at it again and see how it stands for a potential game.

Re: Dwarf Fortress
What about Rimworld? it has a Dwarf fortress feel but is much simpler yet also based vastly in the future, Giving it plenty more to work with. With a particular mod you can pretty much customize all character options as well as all the supplies weapons and items that you could possibly spawn with.
Let me also mention that this game is brutal and unforgiving people can die in a flash and then it's pretty much over if you don't watch yourself

rimworld wrote:The flavor of RimWorld is a mix between hard sci-fi and the Old West. [...] Inspired by the space western vibe of Firefly, the deep simulation of Dwarf Fortress, and the epic scale of Dune and Warhammer 40,000.
Actually from what I've seen it seems more like cool post-apocalyptic 'robots versus crossbows' RPGs like Rifts or Gamma World than 40K or Dune 'space operas'.
RimWorld uses an AI Storyteller (modeled after the AI Director from Left 4 Dead) who analyzes your situation and decides which event she thinks will make the best story.
RimWorld uses an engine that was originally developed to power a tactical combat sim similar to Jagged Alliance 2 to make small-team firefights interesting
Also: Detailed wound system, generated world, individual colonist psychology, differing tech-level societies, tameable animals, various power sources
All of this appeals to my masochistic simulationist side - and you weren't kidding about quick deaths - I just watched a LP with fatally botched operation on a frost-bitten toe.

Re: Dwarf Fortress
Oh it's very brutal! but at the same time somewhat fair, nuclear winters or volcanic explosions can cover the skies in ash and freeze everything over but if you're savvy enough you might just be able to scrape by from scavenging outside your save zone and hunting what little animals are left. Things like Paste dispensers can make the most out of any food you put in it but the end result taste horrible and can put your colonists in a fairly bad mood. But hey it's a living right
Generally the only hard-core wipes that can happen to the colonists are raids from pirates or tribes that are just too numerous or overpowered. But if you prepare You'll generally be able to survive with minimum casualties. But hey if you're not careful your favourite sniper might just lose a hand or leg, or take a bullet in the brain but still survive! but then you have a practically useless lobotomite wandering around the colony Having to be fed without putting in any of the work. What will you do with them? you could always euthanize, or you could just send him out into the wilderness to die off. Or if you're feeling particularly nasty or in need of cash you can harvest his organs and sell them to the nearest pirate ship that passes by.
A very sour taste in your fellow colonists minds. Well that is unless their psychopaths

Re: Dwarf Fortress
Rim World looks pretty awesome! I think I may have to try it out when I have a bit more free time.
