Re: Weekend Mix - Jan 22nd
I've been going through the Bowie stuff I never listened (90% of his work) and there have been some hidden gems - but it also has been a re-discovery of how much I had been into some of his later era work and forgotten how much I liked it. Blasting the Heart's Filthy Lesson down at Carleton, playing Hallo Spaceboy as N64 wrestling theme music, catching a Bowie/NIN concert, and the great 'I'm Afraid Of Americans' which I listened to on my way to protests.
As ever the non-conformist, the current mass media mourning for Bowie backs me want to back away from him but right now I'm just going to flick my lighter and sing along with the rest of the crowd: GOD IS AN AMERICAN! GOD IS AN AMERICAN!Bring Me the Head of The DISCO KING!
Hallo Spaceboy [Live]
[I posted this one because I only saw this concert from the nose-bleed section - so it was interesting to see it up close.
Fucking 90s - crazy decade] Don't You Want to Be Free? I want to be Free!
I'm Afraid Of Americans [V1 - NIN remix]
Re-watching this two decades later I was surprised that it wasn't just a good video but has aged into a classic. Nice to see a grungy Trent before he 'roided up. "No one needs anyone, they dont even just pretend" Effete pretentious Brits on one side, gun-obsessed American stalkers on the other - it's the story of Canada...
Bring Me The Disco King (Lohner Mix)
This is an older Bowie song remixed for the Underworld soundtrack by a NIN alumnus. It has been in heavy rotation since I first heard it last week. The lyrics seem to be a mature Bowie reflecting on the craziness of the late 70s, some have suggest it is a sequel to his The Man who Sold the World as conversation between Bowie and himself (or his muse). This is a great, great song. "You promised me the ending would be clear"

David Bowie - All The Madmen
Off the 'The Man Who Sold The World'(1970) album. Bowie was introduced to the art scene by his older schizophrenic half-brother Terry who was repeated institutionalized. In this song Bowie makes his allegiance clear: "'Cause I'd rather stay here / With all the madmen / Than perish with the sadmen / Roaming free". Sound like early Sabbath or Zeppelin (especially the latter's mix of folkiness & heavy guitars) but with unmistakable Bowie touches.
David Bowie - Lazarus
As a song from his last album and therefore a seeming message beyond the grave this song has been getting some attention. In the video Bowie lies disorientated in a hospital bed as Lady Cancer lurks beneath clawing at him. A second Bowie, his artistic soul, emerges and tries to cram as much life and ideas into the remaining time before returning to the dark. Powerful imagery but it wouldn't mean much if the song's wasn't good. The song isn't good - it's great. This way or no way / You know I'll be free / Just like that bluebird / Now, ain't that just like me?
Keep posting home-made videos, keep writing, keep playing music, keep dancing through the fire, keep making art.
