St. Clare's Sleep Lab
Today at 0700 NDT I left work at St. Clare's hospital for the last time. It is a weird mix of happiness, sadness and pride. Happiness knowing that in a few days I will be living closer to people who I love and will get to see far more regularly. Sadness in that Newfoundland has been my home for the past 4 years and it really is a special place. Pride in knowing the prior to me starting work here in 2012, Newfound did not have a sleep lab anywhere in the province. In the past 4 years I have treated 100s of patients and in doing so have saved lives, improved quality of life for many and prevented disability. I feel confident that I can walk away from the sleep lab here and know that it is going to continue to operate and treat people, saving 1000s more lives and reducing the burden in the health care system.
It wasn't easy getting the sleep lab up and running. The public system has a boot on its throat and trying to get anything new is not easy. So, it isn't the prettiest sleep lab, it doesn't have the best equipment, but we improvised with what we had and we made it work.
It was a victory for the people of Newfoundland and for myself.

Re: St. Clare's Sleep Lab
Congratulations. It sounded like a daunting (but interesting) assignment when you first headed out to the Rock, I'm glad to hear you can leave with a sense of accomplishment. I have felt something like that mixture of emotions at the end semester but on a far smaller scale. The combination of Newfoundland and Sleep Disorder forces me to ask how many cases of the 'Hag' you encountered?
I found a painting of St.Clare intervening to save a kid from wolves on her Wikipedia page (apparently she is now the Patron Saint of TVs?!?) and decided to change it to celebrate your run at St.Clare's. Now it is you fighting off the twin evils of disease and privatization!

Somebody else is going to have to re-attach that kid's arm - but they will sleep well tonight!
