Who knows what 'rock and roll' means anymore? To me it has become inseparable from horrible radio 'classic rock' that has been gelded and reworked into a 'work-drum' for the modern worker. Songs of passion and rebellion re-played and re-played until they become their opposite as banal songs of oppression stuck in between advertisements and vacuous announcers.

But every so often I can still by struck the overwhelming power of straight-forward 'rock & roll' - fist held high in the air, cursing the posers and rich, playing music that everyone can tap their foot too. This is the last 'rock' song I heard that felt that way.

It's about heading out into cold grey city streets and still feeling the rush of life and human contact. It's about karma and justice and other illusions that get us through life.

Lyrics

I just can't help believing 'though believing sees me cursed, for belief ignores the heathen's day-by-day sigh: 'Even worse!'
But for all we are receiving there's an evens key to turn - You are the generation that bought more shoes and you get what you deserve

Winter sweeps the streets of evening, this frequency's my universe!
To reel in a deeper meaning or feeling in seas where schools of fools be first
But for all we are receiving there's an evens key to turn -
You was the generation that snorts for tunes [cocaine] and you get what you deserve

Burberry [Iconic British Luxury Brand] Beamer [BMW] Beakheads leaving Adidas sleek mystique reversed [???]
Without a dream or scream between 'em [apathy], believing time does reimburse [interest on money? fatalistic?]

So for all we are receiving there's an evens key to turn - You was the generation that bought more shoes and you get what you deserve!

When I first heard this song it didn't really click with me, however, a few hours later the lyrics got stuck in my head. I came back and listened to it again. It was catchier the second listen. Again later the song was stuck in my head so again I came back and listened to it. Now after having listened to this song several times I have really come to appreciate it and it is a really good song.

The funny part is that many people would look at the list of songs we're posted (Armenian & Polish dirges, old Blues, German Dark Wave & Download, sea shanties, socialist folk-songs) and think we were crazy and the songs were unlistenable - while this song is a fairly conventional rock'n'roller.

But maybe that's why I posted this after the Seeger songs and sea-shanties - all are popular/populist songs.
