Love And Rockets - Haunted When The Minutes Drag (1985)

The typically pop song is 2-4 minutes, the typically psychedelic rock-out is 15-20 minutes, so an 8-minute pop song verging into psychedelica is a strange beast and "Haunted When the Minutes Drag" is in fact a Frankenstein mixture of two separate L&R pop songs (unsurprisingly titled "Haunted" and "When the Minutes Drag"). This could be a disastrous mash-up about yet another longing/break-up song but instead it rises up from the operating table, and launches into one of the greatest pop-goth epics. Bouncy yet melancholy guitar, sighing 'ohhhhs' mixing with rapid-fire lyrics (by your eyes! by your mouth! by your hair!), pop hooks given echo effects, and a switching between two songs that gives a nice steady build-up punctuated by plateaus.

This is a song that provides an antidote to dragging minutes because those eight minutes of music just fly by.
