Lycia - Bright Stars (2015) Empty Lycia - Bright Stars (2015)

This is one of best songs from latter-day Lycia. I had considered post it before but in researching the lyrics I discovered that the key word in the song "north-west" was actually "south-west" and I momentarily lost interest. My 'northern' bias lead me astray.

Last night I went outside at 4am, the wind was rough and dew-laden but wonderfully warm. A low over Huron was dragging up a south-western front full of blustery tropical air. These moments of rapture can only occur in spring or fall. The stars were blazing in the sky, I would guess their light was refracted though all the moisture, but the effect was stunning. There was old man Winter (Orion) laying down of the horizon, but his stars were brilliant and wet not his usual crisp nordic precision.

The combination of a 'south-west' and 'bright stars' was an observable fact. This isn't exactly what Lycia's song is about, it's more about nostalgia and radio-towers, but I have a new fondness for the 'south-west' now and so the whole song clicks into place for me.

Lycia wrote:towers...to the southwest
lights glare...bright like stars
to the southwest, through the haze
to the southwest
and just remember
what used to be and how it used to be
and how…

static...through the airwaves
white lights...bright like stars
through the airwaves, through the dark
through the airwaves
and just remember
what used to be and how it used to be
and how it used to be

bright like stars, bright like stars
what used to be…
how it used to be…

southwest...from the rooftop
lights flash...bright like stars
from the rooftop, through the trees
from the rooftop
and just remember
what used to be and how it used to be
and how…

late night...in the warm room
lights burn...bright like stars
in the warm room, eyes closed hard
in the warm room
and just remember
what used to be and how it used to be
and how it used to be

bright like stars, bright like stars
what used to be…
how it used to be…
