Ladytron - Ghosts (2008)
There's a ghost in me who wants to say "I'm sorry"
Doesn't mean I'm sorry
Part of sanity is acknowledging that you are haunted by earlier version of yourself. Younger selves who are still fearful, apologetic, cringing. Younger selves who are arrogant, vain and demanding.
Just because you are made of these ghosts doesn't mean that they are you.
Just because you feel an emotion doesn't mean it is real.
The neocortex has some ability to sort through all those ghosts and adjust their volume.
Genre metaphors do help us deal with our 'Minds': our minds are haunted house inhabited by ghosts of yourselves and others, a time-machine wildly ricocheting from malleable memories to future anxieties, a genie's bottles full of outrageous desires and wish-fullfillment, Dinosaur Robots that act in very habitual ways with much of the background pre-programming being a very ancient inheritance, and, of course, our minds are even better than the TARDIS able to contain a whole universe in-between a few inches of skull.
Take one of these metaphors and give it a catchy English electro-pop beat and I'm in.
