Just for Laughs
Hop over to youtube and check out any "just for laughs" comments sections. Humans - yes, humans - love this stuff and so do I. The multicultural reaction of social horror and then relief are some of the most profound - yep, profound - media there has ever been. The limit to 95% of media is that it is scripted, the other 5% is a wasteland, but with that wasteland are the honest reactions of horror and happiness.
Humans hugging and supporting each other is a UTOPIA. This is the reality we live in across the globe; where simple support of each other is a utopian fantasy --- now forever postponed by COVID.
This is Canada's flagship YT program. It is humanity at its core: shame, anger, fear and relief. And the message is: question what in front of you and act with compassion (you might be on camera). Some pranks are sexist, racist or ableist (too many blind pranks!) but I can forgive them. I cannot forgive those who promote gun violence and revenge but I can forgive this because the human souls shines through it in a rare way. A single human's honest reaction reveals 98% of Hollywood's output as the horrible soul-cancer it is.
I have always loved the homophonic nature of the French 'thank you', so one more time with feeling: MERCI!

Have been a fan for many years! Make as many trips to Montreal as I can and have never been able to catch them at work! Think it's a Canadian thing!

I love how supportive this community is.

It’s sad that we won’t be able to do that for a while
The Holy one of Israel.
we are social beings and need each other, in the midst of a prank, all are laughing and enjoying themselves, other cares of the world like racism do not exist, if we could live like this permanently the world would be a better place, continually laughing smiling and hugging each other, but after the prank and people walk away and the laughing and joking has finished, we are faced with harsh realities.

@The Holy one of Israel. it is the utopia. Unfortunately we can't live like this. The walls that grow us apart is too thick to be destroyed. Religions conflicts, racism, prejudice and etc. Things like this make the most of us face harsh realities, but it's indeed nice to think how great it would be if we all live like the way you describe.

Re: Just for Laughs
If you watch this at a certain angle you can see a powerful political statement. Watch their eyes.
And wait for 1:23 everything about the pride of Quebec, and of males in general, is encapsulated in that resistance. [It's also fun to watch the reaction of the actress too]. Every "big tough guy" can only hope they have the courage of that guy. No guns, no yelling, nothing American, but no compromise with an authoritarian state either. That guy is my standard for basic male decency, everything else is show.

Re: Just for Laughs
I'd be curious to know about how these pranks come together? Does anyone ever get injured trying to "save" one of the pranksters? Do you sign a waiver so you can appear on the show afterwards?

Re: Just for Laughs
some of the show's international popularity comes from people viewing it on Air Canada flights (according to the # of comments that mention this)
the core emotion is relief - almost salvation - from a nightmare rapidly engulfing them. I'm not sure where else with emotion occurs outside of medical diagnosis or mistaken bad news.
there are many bad pranks, especially the highly genderized ones, but it is such a chance to many emotions exotic to modernity - communal relief, personal salvation, reality-shaking wonder - that it is still worth it.
