Stories of Stark
There are countless stories of Stark that I remember. This story is one that came back to me recently. Stark loved to sleep on the bed. So much so that he would pretend to sleep when he was asked to get off the bed. He would close his eyes and act like he couldn't hear us. He would pretend to be sleeping even while being dragged off the bed. Every so often he would open his eyes a little bit just to see what we were up to. He would keep up this act until he was dragged completely off the bed and then suddenly wake up. It was frustrating and hilarious all at the same time.
Re: Pictures of Stark
No one slept well the first night we had here without Stark. Cricket kept pacing up and down the staircase to check the front-door in case Stark was coming back. Both Steph and I thought we heard Stark's familiar whine. The house felt vulnerable without his presence. It made me realize how much Stark and I had shared guard-duty for the house.
Stark's big dark profile was intimidating (but it was an illusion quickly dispelled by his big tongue and wide smile). He had no problem sitting for hours on the front deck (summer or winter) watching for visitors or waiting for Steph to return from work. If strange dogs came he could overcome his aches and pains to race up the hill and confront them - or at least cover their scents with his own.
When he first came out here it used to bother me that he would always urinate over where I had just pissed outside. Eventually it became a game where I would try to hide from him when urinating but for the past few years we proudly combined our urine to let all the racoons, deer, bears, fishers and strange dogs or cats know what hybrid-team of humans and dogs guarded this little patch of land. There was a nice rain burst last evening but I was also aware that it would also wash away some of Stark's last scent markings.

It use to bother me to when he would piss where I had just pissed. I remember waiting for him to piss so I could piss over his piss or piss a little bit then wait for him to piss and then go back and piss over it again. It was at that point that I realised Stark had won. I was doing what he was doing. I eventually came to accept Stark's behaviour and in time it also became a bonding thing where we would pee on the same things. When I was up visiting he did it to me again and it made me laugh and feel happy. Going to miss you lots Stark and all of your quirky behaviours!
Re: Pictures of Stark
Stark was great for waiting on the deck for me to return home from work. In the last few years he became lazy and would not go on the trails unless both Hobb and I went.
He liked to pull rawhides to the back of his throat where they would get lodged. He would then repeatedly stick out his tongue and look for a human to help him by reaching down his throat (up to the elbow!) to grab the slimy thing. We banned him from having rawhides but he would steal them from other dogs and if a human saw him he would try to hide it down his throat.
He was so exuberant and vocal (and dangerous to himself) that a friend affectionately named him her "big dum-dum".
