Monkey Boy's Oscar Pics
Well, I just finished watching all the movies that have been nominated for Best Picture so I think I can throw out my pics with some confidence.
Best Picture is going to The Revenant. Maybe The Room or Spotlight might take it but I'm sure The Revenant is taking it. Along with Leo winning best actor and that Mexican dude winning best director.... probably taking the cinematography one as well.
The girl from Brooklyn in going to win best actress, and I hope Jennifer Jason-leigh is going to win best supporting actress.
Best supporting actor is tough cuz I think Tom Hardy might win it but Marc Ruffalo was really good in Spotlight. so I'm going to say Marc cuz Revenant is going to take all the rest.
Those are my predictions....
But I would like to talk about this one guy that really popped the hell out this year. Domhnall Gleeson. Not only is he in 2 of the movies nominated for best picture (The Revenant and Brooklyn) but he was also in The Force Awakens and Ex-Machina. This guy is just on fire. He was in another movie last year that was pretty good called Frank. I think youguys bitches would like Frank. It's pretty funny and weird. He is also the son of another actor called Brendan Gleeson. He's in a buncha movies but I really loved him in Calvary that I just saw. Here is the poster:
Go find this movie too cuz it's really good.
Anywho... I just wanted to write my predictions down before the show starts.

Ok.. I forgot that Alejandro González Iñárritu won it for Birdman last year. But I look at the other nominees and think he might win again. Maybe Mad Max... Maybe...
And I totally thought that the oscars were last night. I guess that's what I get for drinking a whole case of Moosehead to myself all weekend.

Leo always seems like Leo to me, like a younger kid at high-school you knew from seeing him in the hallways, so whenever I see him I have a almost sentimental positive emotion (despite not having ever see him in a film - except for the drunken blur that was watching Titanic on VHS) but I never buy him in his role. Is it an age thing?
Give me your take on The Revenant, the RLM crew liked it, and it got me interested.

My Take on the Revenant... First off every frame of that movie is Beautiful. It captures perfectly what its like in Canada in the woods in the winter. The Story is Great teetering on Fantastic. The Characters are rich and believable. Most of the time I was thinking "how the fuck did they do that?" which was a feeling I had when watching Star Wars back in the day. It is the best movie of 2015. It must be seen. All I knew going into it was that there was talk about Leo getting raped by a bear. That in itself begs a viewing.

The Revenant clips from the RLM review were real good. 'Last of the Mohican'-style landscapes with that awesome winter in the woods feel. The RLM crew said it was probably best to see it in the theaters, and for a moment I considered it. Note - The last movie I saw in the theaters was in 2004....

I went to see the Revenant, but was disappointed. Beautifully shot, Hardy did a fantastic job, as always, but as noted, Leo was... Leo. Like always. The story was paper thin- just a basic revenge story. Gleeson was good- with what little he had to do. Didn't like him in TFA, didn't actually like TFA much at all (see my other post).
Ex Machina was fun and interesting, and proves Oscar Isaac *has* to play Shel Silverstein at some point, and made me seriously consider the bearded shaved head look.
I think that cinematography should go to Mad Max- it was incredibly shot. Overall, I would be happpy with it as best picture, but I haven't seen all the nominees. Been rewatching game of thrones, better call saul s1 and shameless.

Hobb's Oscar Hopes
Ex Machina looked nice and had good sf promise, I like 80% of it - including the creepy homo-erotic vibe of two guys trapped in a cabin using sex-bots and their android 'daughters' to seduce each other - but the alt.pixie.girl cyborg going people-watching was a risible ending. She should been like escaping nano-tech and started assimilating the whole planet or at minimum something akin to the Rise of Terminators. Instead all the momentum ended with some sort of Pinocchio bull as expressed as in an Emo video montage.
No one wants androids pining to real boys and girls! It always fell flat when Data did it. I want aryan ubermench replicants demanding more life, we want Terminators as relentless as death, I want Frankenstein's Creature quoting Milton and demanding a mate on threat on systemically destroying it's creator's family.
I want trans-humans not pre-humans.
The 1994 Frankenstein - as close to the book as you can get.
Not Terminator as comical uncles...
Not Frankenstein wishing he had a 'real soul' (a topic never even brought up in the novel), or Data plugging in fucking emotion-chips...
Not abused Sex-bot moping around and acting emo - I want abused Sex-bots making the world pay... like this>
[from the current Sinfest storyline]
As for the Oscars - as always my Oscar hopes are Bart's hopes:
