Woodcock Comedy
So that woodcock has returned to the top on driveway with it's crazy electronic BEEEN-TT call. If it did that call year round I would have to chase it away or kill it - but I do admire its bravery/stupidity. Last Sunday, despite being closely surrounded by me, a dog and two cats, it kept doing that call, until I nearly stepped on it, then it burst into the air with that strange whistling it's wings make and scolded us with it's equally strange 'bells and whistles' curse words.
I have heard at least four calls from that woodcock: the beeen-t mating call, whistling wings, pissed off 'bells and whistles', soft nervous singular sounds as we got close and the noise it did while dancing in front of us. Unlike in previous years, where it was known only by its calls and flying overhead in the twilight, the woodcock has been seen multiple times at dusk, including a crazy mating dance in front of us. The mating season must be a gift to predators because so many males lose all caution.
The reason this is filed under comedy and not attached to Avian thread is the following two videos.
Ladies and Gentlemen - that freaky little bird known as the Woodcock!
This first video works best if you have some familiarity with 90s alt-rock but it isn't necessary:
