The Road & Super-volcanoes Empty The Road & Super-volcanoes

Post by Hobb Tue 5 Sep 2017 - 14:48

The apocalypse in The Road is left purposely vague, a few rumbles and flashes of light and the civilized world ends.  Many readers assume a nuclear war or meteor strike but McCarthy also mentions the eruption of the Yellowstone super-volcano as a possible cause in an interview.
So when I saw this interview with a scientist on this very subject it caught my attention:

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-09-02/dont-mess-yellowstone-supervolcano-geologists-warn-nasa

The basic points:

  • "I came to the conclusion during that study that the supervolcano threat is substantially greater than the asteroid or comet threat"
  • NASA scientists considered the fact that a super volcano’s eruption would plunge the earth into a volcanic winter. Food reserves would only last about 74 days, according to the UN, after an eruption of a super volcano.
  • Earth has 20 known supervolcanoes, which if they erupt, would trigger planet-changing effects.
  • Major eruptions are incredibly rare, with the last one approximately 26,500 years ago in New Zealand.
  • There has been discussion of 'venting' the Yellowstone super-volcano by drilling down to the lava, pumping water in, and using the steam to run a geothermal energy plant
  • NASA itself admitted that drilling into a super volcano comes with its own risks, like the eruption that scientists are desperate to prevent.

It's hard for me to resist a story that is 1/3 The Road, 1/3 Dr Who's Inferno (1970), 1/3 geology.

Looking up supervolcanoes I found this breaking news:

US Invasion Of Russia Prompts Earthquake Retaliation In Idaho, Yellowstone Supervolcano Warned Is Next

http://www.whatdoesitmean.com/index2375.htm

It's been so long since I've seen weather-control, earthquake machines and HAARP-style weapons. It brings me right back to the more innocent days of conspiracy magazines, Illuminati cards and the first internet sites on those subjects.

On the disaster site I follow they have a list of all the super volcanoes and thier most recent activity.

Here is the link to the site (volcanoes are near the bottom):

Wow - that is a cool site. The list of supervolcanoes is spooky and that map was great.

I was surprised they didn't list the cholera epidemic in Yemen because that has been making headlines lately. But the map did alert me to the wasp invasion in Romania!

I went to this morning and saw the potential tsunami warning for Mexico before I saw the headlines about it. It really gives an idea of how geological active the Earth is.

I enjoy the stranger items like wasp and squirrel attacks but the report selection gets odd. I'm not sure why a car accident that only injured 2 people in Greece is on the map - but I rather have that sort of weirdness.

Global's headline:
Yellowstone supervolcano may erupt sooner than thought, potentially wiping out life

Main quote from article:
“Fortunately, the Yellowstone volcanic system shows no signs that it is headed toward such an eruption in the near future.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I suspect the recent spate of stories on the Yellowstone volcano is just more apocalypse pandering - but it does also serve as a metaphor for the volatile social atmosphere in the US.
