After two weeks in rotation I've finally figured out the 'joke' in both songs: Norway is free of gnomes and Romania is free of vampires because those monsters are pillaging other countries; The gnomes are in Finland and the vampires in Transylvania.

I first heard this on a goth-industrial compilation from Soulseek and have been singing along with it since then.

Are all the lines I remember now, and, of course, the refrain "San Diego Nights!", which might have unconsciously influenced 'Torbay Nights'.    This is a "goth" song because morning and work are hell but the night, ahhhhh, The Night!  The origin song is the origin of much male goth like early NIN and SP, a girl dumped the singer and all that pain and aggression has to go somewhere. "The Eternal Afflict is a band from Essen, Germany, started in 1989."  Weird. I have some sort of innate preference for  'german 1990 synth', I discussed this in a post some years back. I think part of it is that English lyrics intrigues me, there is a weird stilted sound that I like. Add that to their Germanic passion and you get these dark but catchy synth songs with passionate, naive sounding lyrics. It's weird....
