Re: Animal Calendar - May 2020
May 24 - Working on a trail I hear a 'squirrel' approaching me though the leaf-litter, I look for it but cannot find a squirrel, instead I eventually discern a sizable toad hopping downhill to get to the lake.
May 25 - Too hot to sleep so I lie awake upstairs listening to the jungle-dense racket outside: multiple frog choruses overlaid with a whipperwill announcements, toad trilling, one or two unknown birds, and the occasional 'whocooksforyou' from an owl. Earlier in the evening a rose-breasted grosbeak sat right outside out kitchen window blasting its song...
May 26 - Hummingbird has few a regular guest for the last few days. 2nd day of baby squirrels (still clumsily carting peanut around). A tiny toad - but not one of those micro-toads - was hopping up the path to the house. Yesterday the temperature at noon was 21, today it is 28.... By 3 o'clock all the birds have their beaks wide open to vent heat ....

May 27 - Hottest day in Sudbury's history. A pack of 3-4 dragonflies hunting over the frontlawn (apparently looking for small bugs as a spring azure butterfly was left alone), they were dark with gold-orange on top.

Re: Animal Calendar - May 2020
This week's appearance of the moon was a welcomed sight. I noticed yesterday how quickly it can go from what appears a thin sliver of moon (before sunset) to being a significant bright presence in the sky just a couple hours later. Tonight's walks were cooler than last night, especially enjoyed after 9pm. A Junebug was spotted looking rather spasmodic as it quietly fluttered, circling aimlessly on the asphalt.
Within a few short weeks:
May 1 - Garter snake warming up on the sunned rock
Several Grouse evening and early morning feeding on a deciduous tree's freeze-dried fruit
Juncos seem to stop by on their way through
Mostly Chicadees, Sparrows and Robins around, with the occasional woodpecker
Overnight snow and frigid lows during two early May cold spells
Spring peepers fill the neighbourhood with sound
Countless territorial disputes among crows, ravens, hawks
Rabbits. Rabbits everywhere. Rabbits molting - white to mixed white/light gray to mixed white/light gray/light brown. Rabbits that soon seem to do a pretty good job of camouflage on the lawns.
Several pairs of ducks enjoying the neighbourhood's bounty - including what has been put out by some of my neighbours (which the rabbits have also been sampling)
Warmer days in mid-May
Birds are nesting or spending the night in the cedars along the driveway
then just a few days later...
Summer arrives with high 20s and 30 deg C and warm nights
Trees and shrubs erupt into foliage
Yesterday's drive:
The 17/69 bypass offers some gorgeous, vibrant blues and greens
Sparkling sunshine on Silver Lake offers that characteristic glow of hot, late afternoon sun

ALSO
May 09, 2020 4:15 pm
The weather has been great the last two days:
swirling purple sunsets as the clouds dangle their virga through the sunset light
a rising May full moon made diffusely massive as billowing cumulus obscure it but not its light
sudden snow flurries over black water where dead heads and gnarled logs bob in the swollen shorewater
the trail become a vivid vein of white snow and green shoots surrounded by patches of dry rusty-red needles
the swamp at Centennial being visited by a a stately, cautious pair of sandhill perched on a rock, and a fiery buck deer dashing through the thick brush with snappy aerial flashes of his white tail.
