ship leadership
I have been reading the book on merchant marine and it is packed with lots of great info. Here are a few interesting things I have come across. It talks about the style of leadership on boats. It mentions a fraternal type of leadership where everyone was often considered equal and everyone had to agree on decisions. This was often found on fishing vessels especially off the coast of NL. There was also a paternal method of leadership where a captain or skipper would make the final decisions and lived with the rest of the crew. In some cases the captain or master would have a room sewerage from everyone else. There was also the pirates who signed there own contracts and often received equal shares of profits. The profit sharing was similar in fraternal and a bit less so in paternal. With the full steam ships coming of age the leadership moved from one of commonality to a more factory workplace environment. Often the master would not be on the ship and captains and crew would receive wages rather than shares. The divide between captain and crew grew. I haven't read much further into.
It has also talked about weather patterns and crew lists and ships. The schooner being the most popular ship in this area followed by the brig. Often crew lists would have people from the same family on it. In cases where a ship was made locally the crew would often be predominately local as well. It also talks about where most of the cargo flowed and the difference between coastal vessels and deep ocean going vessels.

Re: ship leadership
There also must a 'corporate' or 'military' style of leadership where the leadership lives separate from the crew and makes decisions unilaterally. Captain Ahab being the ultimate avatar of this style.

Ya as you get away from the smaller vessels Masters could be living anywhere. There was also mentioned in the book about how the military enforced a new style of leadership on the seas. Essentially removing pirate socialism from the seas and enforcing more "free market" leadership.
