Willie Thrasher - Wolves Don't Live by the Rules
Been meaning to mention that I'd heard this on CBC Radio a few months ago. The song's also been recently covered.

Great song!
There is a modern cover (very CBC2-ish in sound) that has great archival footage of Inuit communities but the song is too mellow for me.
I played the muted footage of the modern video with Willie Thrashers's song ...
Watching the kid's jump on ice flows, or paddle around as giant float-planes came in, you can feel exactly where the energy of the song comes from. The modern song drains too much of the wolf out of the song!

Re: Willie Thrasher - Wolves Don't Live by the Rules
Interesting that in all these years listening to CBC I hadn't heard a mention of the Native North America Vol. 1...and on the note of CBC 2, I've needed to take a break from it. It's precisely because it has become far too dominated by CBC2-ish songs, as you stated in reference to Thrasher's Wolves cover.
I can see why the Willie Dunn song I Pity the Country was featured in the promo for Light in the Attic Records (or the compilation). I am a sucker for singer/songwriter music, and well maybe it's also a combination of the sweet guitar mixed with his voice and lyrics.
It is a song that also - most especially for the voice - made me think of this one that I've really enjoyed:

I'd call that the 'Gordon Lightfoot' music of my very early youth. A lifetime ago when I was small and everything was big.
Here is some Terry Jacks from 1972-4, the production is poppier but still has a similarity...
