Election Time
The colony is having an election and 5 candidates are running.
Takeru, Val, Wallaby, Pitts, and Raccoon.
Platforms:
Takeru
- Drug use restrictions should be tightened
- Life is complex, and so are our problems
- We're stronger when we're united
- We can only do what's right for us
- Things were better in the old days
Val
- Everyone in our colony should be able to succeed
- I will solve our problems
- Life is complex and so are our problems
- The mayor shouldn't meddle in private affairs of colonists
- My experience and know-how would make me a good mayor
Wallaby
- The colony is headed for disaster
- We need to be more mindful of each other
- Things are good but could be better
- Drug usage restrictions should be loosened
- I'll do what needs to be done
Pitts
- Life is complex and so are our problems
- You need a leader that cares about performance
- No one else is capable of leading this colony
- Things are good but could be better
- Let's ground ourselves in reality
Raccoon
- Drug use restrictions should be tightened
- We need to look at things as they are
- As mayor, I'll tackle our problems carefully
- Simple solutions are usually the best
- The mayor shouldn't meddle in private affairs of colonists
Current drug use policy allows for:
Use of alcohol socially
Use of psycoid tea socially
Use of smokeleaf socially
And use of all other drugs for addicts only

Re: Election Time
Val won and is now mayor of Hookum's Bay
During her time as mayor so far:
- Replaced all wood walls surronding colony with basalt bricks
- Install 6 more ballistas for defense
- Added a high tech research facility
- Added a communication terminal to speak with other factions
- Added orbital trade networks for improved communications
- Began to dabble in genetic modification

Re: Election Time
Our main source of physical power is pigs dragging stuff around - do the others in the orbital trade network know about this? We should also keep quiet about that cannibalism...

Re: Election Time
I haven't explored the orbital trade networks yet. The colony is a mix of primative and advanced tech.
Re: Election Time
There was a new election. Braga, Von Schild, and Mike were running.
Von Schild won with 13 votes. His platform was:
1.) I will solve our problems
2.) We're stronger when we're united
3.) Everyone in the colony should be able to succeed
4.) Things were better in the old days
5.) The mayor should ensure that every colonist is taken care of.

Re: Election Time
What has been accomplished so far while Von Schild has been mayor.
- We are slowly collecting genetic material to begin our genetic experiments. We managed to collect humonoid and canid samples so far. Unfortunately the sample seem to have to come from deceased subjects. We used the samples to make canid human muscle fibers which will be implanted into one of our colonists persumably. Not sure who yet. Any thoughts on who? The fibers should make the subject run faster. (I keep updating the colonists post)
- We have done away with our ballistas and installed slow firing heavy machine gun nests instead. We used these very effectively against the Decayed Apes.
- We have created a drug lab to produce high quality medicine, antibiotics, and analgesics.
- Several successful trade missions with space traders. Mostly trading for cloth to make medicine but also for some armour.
- Successfully defending against several Decayed Ape raids.
- Made peace with Decayed Apes.
- Have goodwill with Decayed Apes and have begun trading with them.

Re: Election Time
I like the updated colony list!
Is there anymore info on Susskind the evolved chimp who attacked Goldfish?
Giving a 'Kinsey rating' for the colonists is weird, sort of like the focus on drug policies during elections. I like the weirdness but it does seem strange for a tribe struggling to survive to worry about sexual orientation and drug policy as major issues.
I would nominate Val for genetic upgrading. She's young, in good health, outdoorsy, a good shot and friendly to almost everyone (so she's unlikely to use her super-speed to start killing them off).

Re: Election Time
I believe both the Kinsey rating and all the election stuff comes from one mod. I believe it was called psycology. I put it on because I really didn't like the way the colonists behaved. Something didn't sit well with me and this mod helped address it a bit. You post that links to the gamergate biphobia thing explains a lot. It was hard to explain but when I played the game in vanilla I didn't like it. It took a lot of mods to make it fun for me. When I first played it, it almost felt south parky or just plain stupid and finding out more and more about this guy it makes more and more sense. I figure I have about 30 mods running with right now to give it a bit of life that the is was desperately lacking.
I agree that Val is probably the best choice. I have been playing favourites since the start too. The original colonists tend to get the nicer stuff. Val was one of the Toad clan and an original.
I unfortunately don't have any info on Susskind. I don't remember where he came from or anything of that sort. I should have been doing some sort of story telling from the start rather than part way through. Obviously with a lot of what happens in the game I am adding my own story elements in to make it more entertaining or complete.

Re: Election Time
It was an interesting article. I'll never understand why people think mixing political thinking with games is some sort of abomination when politics is built into the code of any simulation.
Without this understanding you can never move to the deepest rule of gaming: Be ready to start using houserules/mods, don't let some game designer ruin your fun. Since I first played D&D, I've never encountered a RPG/Sim that didn't need effort to rescue it from its' creators. On a larger scale I apply this attitude to everything from the 'game' of capitalism to the the 'game' of evolution. As human we don't have to accept any 'rule set'.
Here's the rock_paper_shotgun article that has 'C+ pseudocode' examples, Sylvester's comments about being the victim of a "witch hunt" and all the usual dim-bulbs yelling "It's just a game!"
I think all the over-moralistic focus on gender is misplaced but Sylvester's reactions are no better. I found this pre-Rim World essay by him on simulation and it's good stuff but his alt-right politics (i.e "Canada sends non_pc people to pound-me-in-the-ass prison! I'm being oppressed!") aren't going to age too well. It might be a right-wing Montreal anglo thing or the time he spent in the Reserves.
I'm having lots of fun with Hookum's Bay and appreciate the efforts you are putting into modding and storytelling. I really like the Rifts mix of various tech levels and I'm curious to see what happen next.

Re: Election Time
There was another election and Von Schild remains mayor.
- We have expanded our genetics program and have been making hybrid species. We had one mishap and created a nasty creature that we had to put down
- Medical abilities have increased. We have successfully removed cancer from 3 colonists.
- There have been no raids
- We can now can food instead of smoking it

Re: Election Time
Von Schild ios doing a good job. Not many mayoral projects include the successful curing of cancer and peace with mutant ape raiders. Another few years of consolidating our advancements (canning & CRISPR) sounds good.
"put down" as in euthanize? Or as in "a desperate fire-fight to kill the creature before it ate everyone"?
