R2N Greatest Bits Empty R2N Greatest Bits

Post by Hobb Tue 13 Mar 2018 - 13:31

R2N began on March 30th 2015, since then I've posted 1030 times, which is almost exactly one post per day for three years. Time for some reminiscences about what has past....

Writing about zombies, survival video games, The Road, Dr.Who, Star Trek, and D&D has really changed me. I no longer define myself as a genre geek, I still am one but staring at just how right-wing both the creators and fandom of most sf/horror/fantasy stuff has left a deep impression on me. I have to thank Seth Shadow for his input on these topics.

https://consortiumnews.com/2018/03/20/capitalisms-process-of-universal-commodification/ wrote:In 1983, the Irish novelist Iris Murdoch remarked that “we live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality.” Che Guevara, many graffiti artists, some of the “crazy ones” depicted in Apple’s “Think Different” campaign, the original radicals of the Weather Underground, and the members of the Black Panther Party, all knew what reality was. They wanted to change it without recourse to fantasy. And, each time their attempts were stymied by a system that judged human needs solely in terms of monetary profit. This is brilliantly demonstrated by the fact that the images of these enemies of the system have been re-presented to us as within the context of profitable fantasy. The process has been remarkably successful and remarkably lucrative. It is also depressing and, in terms of social progress, represents a road to nowhere.

Music has always been a major part of R2N. I enjoyed sharing whatever stuff I was listening and hearing the new stuff Reb would post (with a light seasoning of Yellow_Dart's industrial picks and a few odd and ends). Scrolling through the 3 pages of songs we've compiled I just want to put them in a mix and listen. The Origins of Skinny Puppy project (aka the PuPpy ViVi/DissecTion) taught me plenty. From revealing a great catalog of music from that era, to what effects machines they used, to a look at the tape-trading scene of early industrial.

I've done lots of political ranting that was more about venting anger than anything too insightful but the James Woolsey bio, Military Pollution and some of the conversations with Just_Sum_Guy about Police Carding and Marijuana Legalization were useful. The Woolsey page definitely attracted some outsiders to stop by.

Along with media, music and politics there has also been a steady thread of memorials and nostalgia. The nostalgia was fun and it was great to hear from Monkeyboyz39 again. It was also nice to be able to support each other through work difficulties, strikes and cross-country moves. There are also tears mixed into the foundation of r2n, I leaned on this site a few times over the past 3 years when the pain of loss was too much.

And we made our own stuff too. The Demogorgon Experience, Co-operative Canine Control Project, my Moon Calander, The Rim World saga, Reb's photos of Labrador, icebergs and Puerto Rico, Marc's photos of birds, that weird picture of Toronto after the SDF-1 explosion....
